Tune-Up #5: Social Networking

DEFINE
Social Networks are websites that allow users to post personal information on the internet such as current family happenings, videos and pictures. It’s a great way to keep in touch with relatives, friends and coworkers. Reunions and meetings can be initiated with others through social networks as well. Many sites have user groups to join including alumni organizations, civic associations, and various celebrity fan pages. Social Networks can also be used as promotional tools for businesses and charities all across the world.

DISCOVER
All of the following websites are free to join. If you decide to become a member of any social networking site, only add the personal information that you want others to know. The privacy features are strict by default and are easily customizable to fit your needs.

1) Facebook: This very popular social networking site provides an easy way for friends to keep in touch and for individuals to have a presence on the Web without needing to build a website. Facebook makes it extremely easy to upload pictures and videos, news feeds, weather information, and play games to compete with friends. The committee has created an account if you wish to use it. The email address is technical_services@tplibrary.org with the generic TP.... password.

2) MySpace: This website is similar to Facebook, but is more customizable. Users can upload graphics and music to personalize their page. Blogs can also be created on MySpace. Until very recently, MySpace was the most popular social networking website. In early 2009, the MySpace audience declined in favor of Facebook.

Note: If you decide to create a temporary account with MySpace, you may close that account at any time by clicking on "My Account" in the upper right-hand corner, then click on the single word "Account" in the upper left-hand corner, and finally, click on "Cancel Account" near the bottom of the page.

3) LinkedIn: LinkedIn is a social network intended for professionals to establish business contacts and recommendations. It easily allows resumes and other career information to be displayed on their profile page. A user profile page emphasizes employment history and education, has professional network news feeds and a limited number of customizable modules. Basic membership for LinkedIn is free, but may be upgraded for a fee. Unlike Facebook and MySpace, LinkedIn requires connections to have a pre-existing relationship.
